Free Phone Calls and Text Messages to Japan

Americans worried about loved ones left devastated by the massive earthquake and tsunami occurred in Japan can now pay less for phone calls and spend more on relief efforts. All thanks to free phone call services offered by various U.S. phone companies.

Communication giants – AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint and Comcast are helping out individuals who are trying to reach Japan-based friends and family members in the aftermath of recent earthquake by providing free calling services to US residents.

AT&T is currently offering “billing relief” for its customers on calls made to Japan through March 31, 2011. This will allow postpaid wireless customers to make free international calls to Japan from the United States or Puerto Rico (for up to 60 minutes), or send free text messages to Japan from a U.S. wireless number. In addition, AT&T customers prevailing AT&T’s residential wireline service are also eligible for billing relief.

Verizon has announced to offer a similar deal to its own customers. Verizon Wireless’ postpaid customers will receive free calling to Japan from now onwards through April 10, 2011. During same time, US-based Verizon Wireless customers will also receive free text and multimedia messaging to Japan. Apart from this, all calls made from Verizon residential landline number to Japan will be rated at $0.00 per minute for the same time period. Customers with Verizon World Plan (300, 500 or unlimited minutes of long-distance calling) can call Japan without using any minutes from their time-allotment blocks. Additionally, Verizon will waive Prepaid Phone Card charges for all long-distance calls placed to Japan from United States until April 10.

T-Mobile USA and Comcast have also announced to provide free calls to Japan. T-Mobile USA is enabling phone calls to Japan for postpaid customers without charges for international long distance through March 31. Till that date, T-Mobile’s Postpaid customers can make Wi-Fi calls and can do Text (SMS) messaging to and from Japan free of charge.

Comcast said that calls will be free for its Xfinity Voice and Business Class Voice customers. Comcast will remove charges from customers’ bills for calls made to Japan by customers during time-frame from March 11 through April 10. Comcast will also cover fees for calls made to both landline and mobile phones.

Also, Sprint‘s representative Crystal Davis confirmed that it, too, will waive the fees of its customers looking to call or text message phone lines in Japan effective thru April 10.
